This Moment

Oh this moment touches eternity;
only in the present, acts of love
do You inspire in me.
Your voice gently calls me to walk with You.
All my past is back behind me;
all my future fears just blind me
to this moment of forever in my hand.

Looking backwards, my feet stumble
from the path of peace, and into frozen bramble.
Eyes strained to the coming days may paralyze with dread,
or tempt me into rushing through…

This moment, touching eternity;
only in the present, acts of love
do You inspire in me.
Your voice gently calls me to walk with You.
All my past is back behind me;
all my future fears just blind me
to this moment of forever in my hand.

Though I sit in this world’s darkness,
You will be my light, a flame of hope within me.
I will trust You, 'til the day each trouble flies like chaff,
outweighed by blazing glory.

God, outside of time and space,
You stoop to hold my hand.
Fleeting moments filled with You
are pearls on heavenly strands.

I'll be honest: if left to myself, I can tend to be a fearful, anxious person.
Many times, I tend to allow these inner fears to ring out my faith,
drawing my eyes to qualms about the future
rather than to the thread of God's plan for me in the present.
My husband Luke pointed me to this quote from C.S. Lewis'
Screwtape Letters
when I was once in such a state, and the wise words helped to inspire this song.
“In a word, the Future is, of all things, the thing least like eternity.
It is the most completely temporal part of time—for the Past is frozen and no longer flows
and the Present is all lit up with eternal rays.
...For the Present is the point at which time touches eternity.”
