Rest Beneath Your Smile

All my wisest words, and all my foolishness;
every shining moment, every failure;
all my vanity, and all my poverty:
it all burns away before your light.

So ragged here I stand,
'til you dress me all in white;
famished here I wait, 'til you feed me;
broken here I fall, dead until your nail-torn hand
touches me and warms me with new life.
Relieved of my pride,
I am finally free just to rest beneath your smile.

It’s in turning from all of my well-worn paths;
it’s in resting near your cross that you save me.
It’s in quietness that all your strength is mine,
as I gaze on Jesus’ wounds alone.

“Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom,
or the strong man boast of his strength,
or the rich man boast of his riches,
but let him who boasts boast about this:  that he understands and knows me,
that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, righteousness and justice on earth,
for in these I delight.”
Jeremiah 9:23-24 (NIV)

“In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength…”  Isaiah 30:15 (NIV)

My heart daily insists upon trying to prove itself worthy to receive affirmation and admiration.
I always seem to be looking for a reason to receive love (even from myself!)
rather than soaking in the truth that I'm lovely simply because God loves me.
It's impossible for him to love me any more, or to love me any less. The end.

This song took some perseverance to write (it didn't come easily),
yet was one I wouldn't abandon to the scrap pile, because I love--and need--its message so much.
