Heaven's Smile

You were young,
and your arms reached out in trust.
Sparkling innocence was lost;
angry words and evil deeds eroded all
you were meant to be.

Chorus:
There’s a smile just for you,
reaching down from heaven’s heartache;
a kind word, meant for you,
mixed with tears and hope’s bright ember.
Like a flower, bruised,
yet opening to the sunshine’s rays,
be still and be made whole.
Breathe in heaven’s smile.

They are young,
and their eyes look down in shame.
They are parched for love’s sweet rain.
Angry words will pierce them through
like they did you all those years ago.

Tell them, “There’s a smile just for you,
reaching down from heaven’s heartache;
a kind word, meant for you,
mixed with tears and hope’s bright ember.
Like a flower, bruised,
yet opening to the sunshine’s rays,
be still and be made whole.
Child, breathe in heaven’s smile.”

As second oldest of twelve, I’ve always loved children. They are the world's most precious treasures.
Interactions as a volunteer and substitute teacher at our local elementary and
middle schools bring me joy and yet sometimes break my heart:
the children are all so eager to be noticed and loved.
While all children are sponges for attention, some seem downright love-starved
(and often the naughtiest in behaviour are the neediest for love).
Sadly, some of the parents I've met also seem to have deep wounds
scabbed over with bitterness, and therefore have very shallow
wells from which to pour into their children.
And so the cycle of pain and self-loathing repeats itself.
The interjection of a divine love--- “heaven's smile”-- into a broken heart
has the power to reshape and heal, something I hope for all of us.
